About the Service Development Director Role
Package: up to £50kThis is a great time to be joining KCLSU. We have continued to develop our supportive and strong working relationship with the College. We have completed a restructure of our senior teams and are now fit for purpose. We have our resources and finances in place and are ready to grasp the opportunities available to us.
Reporting to the Chief Executive, the Service Development Director is a new and key role for KCLSU. It combines both the commercial and non-commercial services and activities found in many students' unions. Managing such diverse services will be a real test of your skills including strategic planning, performance management and service delivery. There is a great variety to the role, being ultimately responsible for the commercial services; venues, bars, retail services, gym and catering as well as all student activities including skills development, volunteering, sports clubs and societies.
This breadth of service management requires a senior manager with deep commercial acumen, who understands that profits support the delivery of other non-revenue generating services. The commercial operation can improve through exploiting new opportunities, creating new revenue streams or addressing under developed areas. But it's not all about revenue. The services need to be well researched, appropriate and for the commercial ones - profitable.
For a current business and service development senior manager, there is scope to truly move the organisation forward and to develop new skills. You will not feel the restrictions of large corporate brand or shareholders to limit your vision. You will however understand the dynamics of student leadership (see the governance section), relish working with a board of trustees and be able to harness this support to deliver organisational goals. Your service area will be creative, forward thinking, customer focussed, efficient and relevant; generating resources which will benefit the organisation as a whole.

- There are over 200 clubs and societies at KCLSU.
- Our commercial services generated £1.9 million last year, with a surplus of £170k.
- We have 2 bars across 2 sites, 1 nightclub, 1 shop (and an online shop) and 1 fitness centre called Kinetic.
- We have 3,500 followers on Facebook.
- We currently receive a £3million grant from King's College.
